NPR: To Save Threatened Owl, Another Species Is Shot

Today NPR release a story by reporter Elisabeth Shogren on the conflict between the endangered northern spotted and barred owls in the Pacific Northwest — “To Save Threatened Owl, Another Species Is Shot“. This is one in what is fast becoming a substantive series of news reports examining the ethics of a decision by the US Fish and Wildlife Service to conduct lethal field experiments, removing barred owls and studying its impact on spotted owls. Barred owls are one reason for the decline of their spotted cousins, but how to grapple with restoring the spotted owl is the subject of moral controversy.
